Helping to make connections across Africa

As part of the Google 4 Africa 2022 event, we were asked to show how the Translate products build connections between more people. We developed a number of scenarios, from a cross cultural “meet cute” moment to breaking news in an internet cafe before settling on the three presented: a pair of Amharic speaking Ethiopian travelers in Kenya trying to get a ride from a Swahili speaking cabbie, an Afrikaans diner in a Zulu cafe in South Africa, and an English speaking young woman who wants to give her grandmother important news in her native Yoruba in Nigeria.

Because of time and budget, each scenario used a different director and crew, so a big challenge was making them all feel like they have the same voice.
